Beaches I’ve Collected
Encaustic on silk
Stacked and shaped pieces of silk are hung in layered segments, embodying the non-tangible, uncollectable, yet cherished, elements gathered from beaches visited over a lifetime. Each segment serves as a visual representation of the intimate relationship we maintain with our memories of the shoreline, invoking the nostalgia that accompanies each visit.
The interplay of color and texture reflects the familiar hues found in shoreline elements: the soft beiges of sandy shores, the pristine clarity of ocean waters, and the deep, mysterious tones of the sea's depths. Glimmers of sunlight dance on the waves, coupled with the gentle caress of sea breezes and the rhythmic sound of crashing waves—all integral components of a sensory experience that shapes our memories.
In this exploration of preserving memories, the concept of "recollection through collection" emerges. Each silk piece functions as a fragment of a larger narrative, contributing to a collage of memories that pieced together evoke the fleeting moments that linger in our minds long after the physical objects have been left behind.
This gathering of recollections—of light, color, and shape—transcends physicality, facilitating a vivid remembrance of the past. The essence of our experiences allows us to revisit the emotions and sensations tied to our connections with nature and the beauty it bestows upon our lives. Through this artwork, viewers are invited to reflect on their personal experiences and the transformative power of nature in shaping our memories and identities.
