Breathing Space

Encaustic on silk - 36in x 60in

"Breathing Space" explores the connection between recovery and rest through reminiscence. Growing up, my home life was often unpredictable and unnerving, but the time spent with my grandparents on the beaches of California and during our annual family trips to Hawaii fostered a sense of calm, predictability, rhythm, and safety. The enjoyable recollection of past events intertwines with the characteristics of one thing reminding me of another.

Rather than accumulating tangible possessions, I collect moments. These moments travel with me through the day-to-day and serve as a tribute of gratitude—a scrapbook of my upbringing. I continue to draw comfort and inspiration from coastal elements such as waves, sand, fog, and mist, primarily through their colors, textures, and rhythmic patterns. The predictability of tides and the repetition of waves are reflected in my repetitive process of assemblage.

Using encaustic mixed media has granted me instant gratification, allowing me the freedom to explore and embrace imperfection. The layers of encaustic monotypes combined with fabric and paper represent the deconstructed layers of painted encaustic, infused with space, light, and air. My desire is to create a space that offers comfort, peace, and stillness. The pieces are larger in size, featuring more prominent textured layers that relate to my desire and growing confidence to occupy more space—declaring a personal commitment to fostering calm and comfort.
